Pug and Girl - A Love Story :)

Ever wonder what the dogs think about rescue? Here's one answer:

I Rescued A Human Today by Janine Allen CPDT

I rescued a human today.

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me.

I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her.

Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

A Rescuer's Creed

I shall be a believer of all that is good in man and of all that is deserving in animals.
I shall plead for their lives, campaign for their safety and uphold their right to a natural death.
I shall seek out the injured and the maimed, the unloved, and the abandoned and tend to them in their last days.
I shall not forget their place in the hierarchy of life, nor that we walk in each other's paths.
I shall bear witness to the wonder they bring into our lives and to the beauty they bestow upon our souls.
I shall renew their spirits when they are waning, bind their wounds when they bleed, cradle them when they whimper, and comfort them when they mourn.
I shall be near them in their hour of greatest need - a companion and friend when the time has come.
I shall watch over them and console them and ask that the angels gather them in their arms.
From the creatures of the earth I shall learn the fruits of compassion and undying love.

In their company I shall indeed be blessed.

Subject: Rescue Help Needed

After hanging up with a woman who's husband has made the infamous "It's Me Or The Dog" threat, I assured her that I would put the word out "there" today. I'm confident if we all work together, a loving, permanent home can be found. So, here goes, feel free to cross post:

FREE TO GOOD HOME:
Male, age 38
- however, often can still act like a two year old.
Will throw hissy fits if he doesn't get his own way. Prefers women, if the *right* guy came along, who knows? VERY possessive of the remote control - if you try and touch it, he will attack. He will sit with you for short periods - cuddling, not-so-much, unless he wants something. Favorite foods are Pizza and Beer - Real Beer, not light beer. Will get an attitude if you mention that Real Beer will make him fat. Messy. Loud. Knows some tricks, such as the quarterback dance.
Can be obnoxious at times, very sweet and loving at other times.
Not a bad sort, really, owner just can't live with the drama anymore.
If you're interested - shipping is an option, you pay for First Class. He does not have a crate, but comes with his own recliner. Comes with money too, but may growl if you ask for some.
There. That's done.....

Garth

Garth

Alainna Chiklis photography

Garth is a 12 year old Black Lab, found living on the streets of Camden NJ, the city that has the highest crime rate ranking in the country! Luckily he had a microchip, so rescuers contacted his owners to tell them they found their dog! His owners told them "he's old and sick, and we don't want him anymore, so do what you want with him" :( For one reason or another, (hunger, pain, confusion) Garth took a bite out of a person or two, and was deemed unplaceable. Somehow he ended up here. He is being treated for Cushings Disease, eating well, and doing fine. He's a typical lab, he wants to be with me every where I go. He shadows me all over the yard, and after 2 weeks, he is off leash all the time! He's fine with other dogs, and even after all he's been through, he is very happy!

11/15/09 Adopted by me! :) Labs 4 Rescue worked very hard to find a santuary for Garth. His sponsor, a dedicated woman named Summer Henry, put together a plan to transport Garth to a santuary in Wisconsin to live out the rest of his life. After all this old man had been through getting here, I just couldn't send him off to Wisconsin. This Thanksgiving I'll thank God that I can offer an old dog a safe place to live out his life, and for compassionate people like Summer Henry of Labs 4 Rescue, who work so hard to make the world a better place, one dog at a time!

Eli

Dan Brummert Photography

10/14/09 Eli : Duck Tolling Retriever. Approximately 1 year old. Healthy, neutered and UTD on shots, heartworm negative. Best described as Alert, Energetic and Smart. Needs a dog savvy person, a fenced in yard and Obedience Training ! A fun, adventurous, independent dog that will do well in an adult only home. Eli's perfect match will have time to devote to meeting his energy needs. No kids please! Contact Canine Guardians for Life.

12/22/09 Nancy Tucker of Toller Rescue has found a fabulous foster home for Eli with a woman named Christi Scarpino. Christi is a dog savvy owner who breeds Boston's and has owned Tollers for over 3+ years. We watched Christi train with her beautiful male Toller, named Turner. (say that 3 times fast!) She is everything I had hoped for for Eli...dog savvy, fenced yard and she actively trains her dogs...I am confident that Christi will work wonders with Eli...if he is going to find a permanent home, it is through her and Toller Rescue! Best of luck Eli! Be good! Find your way into someone's heart! For information about Eli or other Duck Tolling Retrievers, please contact Toller Rescue

Eli, now known as Rudy, UPDATE: 2/1/10

Hi MJ,
Saw your email to Nancy about a potential home for Eli, who is now Rudy.  He is doing great!  He is in his 4th week of obedience class.  He catches on quickly and is progressing in his ability to trust people.  He doesn't like rapid movement of kids or dogs, but he is much better.  I have started a blog for him.  Feel free to pass this on to anyone who might be interested http://rudytherescue.blogspot.com/
He is going to make someone very happy.  He is pretty low key and his favorite activity is laying on a dog bed in the living room chewing on a variety of bones.  He knows to go into the toy box and take what he wants, and he will lay there surrounded by chew toys.  He is finally starting to play!   I am happy to have him.  He weighs 54 lbs now and the hair is almost totally grown back in his tail.  I've been giving him Fastrack, Nupro and salmon oil and his coat is getting so much better.  He loves to be groomed and loves his belly rubs.
Christi Scarpino

YAAA Rudy...great job Christi! The work you are doing is truly life saving!

Suzie:

Suzie

Dan Brummert Photography

Suzie, is an 8 year old Pug, a great dog, UTD on everything, house and crate trained, very sweet. Safe to say she is a little chubby? Thinks she is a watch dog! Looking for caring people to share her life with! Contact Pug Rescue of New England

Adopted 10/15/09 by Heather Poole of Scarborough ME!

10/30/09 : Heather called to report that, after a rough start, Suzie is doing better. It seems that Suzie gets really itchy when she gets stressed, and she was VERY stressed going to a new home! The scratching was driving Heather crazy! Heather stuck with it and says she is "starting to like her"..not exactly what I wanted to hear, but better than "I think this is a mistake." It's a big adjustment for both of them. Stay in touch Heather...I think it'll work just fine!

Fritz

Dan Brummert Photography

Fritz : Adopted! 10/14/09 by Rick and Linda Jezylo of Pelham, NH. Very handsome, 1 year old Bernese mix. Neutered, UTD on shots, good with other dogs, very lovable! Owner surrender. He will be the love of your life! Great with children!

Maximus - adopted 9/20/09 !!!

maximus

Max is a wonderful apricot male, who came to PRoNE Memorial Day weekend. He was reported as aggressive, and handle with care. Maximus, as it turns out, is the sweetest Pug you could ever wish for! He does have severe allergies that were not being properly cared for and he just didn't feel good. His eyes were so swollen, they were little almond shaped slits. We couldn't even see his eye lashes! Poor thing! On proper meds, consistent care, and a grain free diet, I am thrilled to say Max has normal, round, Pug shaped eyes. He is an absolute love and bonds quickly. He gets along with all dogs and people. He does get concerned when really big dogs start rough housing, but who doesn't? He will be the love of your life! Max needs an adult only home. The ability to maintain his care and continue his grain free diet are absolute musts!

Bauer - 2/10/09

Bauer is a 3 year old neutered fawn. Great personality, some skin allergies, but nothing too serious. He was owner surrender. He is a little anxious, but is settling in well. Does great in the turnout with all the dogs. Gets a little excited when the bigger dogs growl and play rough, but always recovers quickly.

Bauer is house trained as well as crate trained. He has some obedience, and will "work for food". New owners should be willing to complete a basic training course with him to avoid a repeat of past behaviors. Bauer will make a great little companion dog. Don't wait on him, 'cause he will get scooped up fast!

Adopted 2/28/09

Bauer has been adopted and is literally off to "live on the farm" with his new family including a little black girl pug named Lily in Augusta Maine! Good luck Bauer...have fun!

Update on Bauer, now known as Bo:

Just wanted to share that our first day and night went great.  Lily and Bo are still a bit nervous but as you can see are getting along very well.  He perked up when we arrived at home and was excited when he met Lily.  He explored the house top to bottom and then began to visit each of us.  He seems to be a Dad's boy so far.

Bo and Lily

Lily and Bo

Penny - 7/20/08

6 year old, healthy fawn female.

Penny is the most adorable pug I have ever had in foster. Underneath that adorable exterior however, lives a little tyrant.

Penny was owner surrender due to her behavioral problems...Penny wanted to rule the roost and was not afraid to challenge anyone who got in her way.

She came to us in July of '08 and is just now ready to be offered for adoption in January '09...Penny needed lots of time...time to understand that she needed to be a good little dog.

Through consistency, repetition and basic handling, we have turned this little tyrant into a nice little Pug. She does well with most other dogs, could not care less about cats, and should make a nice addition to an adult only home.

Penny is crate trained and loves the security of her crate when she is left alone. She loves running loose in the yard with her friends and often asks for attention by jumping up.

Her new owners should be knowledgeable dog owners and willing to complete a basic obedience course with Penny. It will be important to a successful adoption that Penny is treated with firm patience to prevent a repeat of her past behaviors. If you are looking for an adorable, independent type, Penny's the one!

Penny: Adopted 2/15/09

Adopted by Carrie Crook of Falmouth Ma. Penny has gone to live on the beach in Falmouth...Lucky her! We wish Carrie and Penny all the best! Good luck Penny...Behave!

Penny update: 2/20/09

Mary Jo,

We just wanted you to know that Penny is doing very well.  She is just a wonderful addition to our family!  She is responding well to the training and we have not had any problems with her.  She does get an attitude with toys and when I was putting drops in her ears (she a little infection), but we have worked through those problems and she has been doing great!

I had a baby shower at the house with 20 people and a 2 and 4-year old and she loved them.  She played with the kids for hours!  Everyone loves her!!

The vet said she a medial luxuriating patella on her back left leg.  He said it was very common with pugs and to just watch her weight and limit her from going up and down stairs.  Do any of your pugs have this and should I be concerned?

She loves to walk around the pond in our neighborhood and loves the beach.  She barks at the seagulls : )  I will have to get some pics for you.

We absolutely love her!!  She sleeps in our room now on a huge cushion. She seems happy : )  Thanks for all of the good work you did with her!

Carrie Crook

Update 4/12/09:

Penny training at the beachPenny and Graham

Mary -Jo,

Just a Penny update! She is awesome and we love her so much!!  Here are some pics of her and her best friend Graham, the smooth collie.  Graham's owner is our trainer as well, so Graham is a great role model for Penny!  She mostly runs off leash with Graham in the woods and at the "Sand Pits" here on the Cape.

She has adjusted so well and she is getting lots of exercise with us.

Hope all is well and happy Easter and spring!!

Carrie Crook

Spanky:

July 15 '08 - 4 year old Neutered, fawn, male. UTD on shots, healthy, housebroken, very sweet, great wih other dogs and seems good with the cats. Let's just say he's on the + size, weighing in at a whopping 41.5 lbs! He should make a great companion. Needs to lose weight and a nail trim, but is otherwise in good shape. Owner surrender due to illness.

Spankya.k.a. Piglet

Adopted 7/19/08 by Iris Miller and family

Update July 27'08 - Iris Miller reports that Spanky is a finicky eater...who would have guessed! He refuses to eat his kibble....hmmm, prefers table scraps perhaps? Stick with it Iris and Spanky should drop those extra pounds fairly quickly! Spanky continues to be a big hit (no pun intended) for all who meet him. And, surprise to every pug owner out there, he has a stubborn side!

Here's Spanky on the couch with his new buddy, Jake:

Spanky and Jake

Iris says that Spanky has officially lost 2 pounds! Good job!

Emma: ...Adopted 7/19/08

Emma is a tiny, 7 month old Boston Terrier, rescued from a puppy broker when she was deemed to "old" to sell. Luckily, she has found her way to rescue.

Emma is a very happy little dog. She loves people and is very cuddly. She does great with other dogs as well as cats, and is extremely social. Because she was crated constantly before she came to rescue, she has house training issues, but we are working on them. She will be available as soon as she can be spayed and brought UTD on shots.

EmmaEmma and KaosEmma

UPDATE:

July 14 '08 - Emma went to the vet for her shots, and is scheduled for spay surgery in 3 weeks. She is doing well with her house training and her terrier personality is finally starting to show. She loves to grab a toy and run with it shaking it and teasing the other dogs in the turnout.

July 19 '08, ADOPTED! By Louise and her 7 month old Boston Sophia of West Paris ME. Louise visited today and the 2 dogs did very well together...they look like they could be litter mates! We wish them the best and look forward to hearing about Emma's transition to her new home!

Monica, aka Mino... Adopted 6/30/08!

We have a tiny black female Pug named Monica. As you can see from her photo, she has a damaged right eye and skin fold dermatitis. When she came to us, her black coat was sun bleached from being left outside all the time. She was dirty and smelled like oil...we suspect she often took shelter under cars or other vehicles. Her skin is clearing up nicely now that she is on a great diet. We will have her eye taken care of by our favorite vets at Hampstead Animal Hospital, then she will be good to go! Monica has a fabulous personality and is deserving of a great new home. Check back for photo updates!

Monica after surgery

Update on Monica:

Monica has had surgery to remove her damaged eye and has come through it like a champ! She is recovering nicely. Her dermatitis is completely gone. She must be feeling so much better! I think she looks like she's smiling!

This great little Pug would make a fabulous companion, and because of her tiny size, she would be a perfect match for an older person or couple. She has lots of personality, bonds quickly with people and has tons of love to share!

Abbie Martin and her 2 girls Sarah and Hannah have taken an interest in Monica, a.k.a. "Mino". We have a play date to see if Mino and their Boston Terrier Lucy might like to be friends!

Sarah and Hannah recently sent Mino beautiful get well cards:

Get well cardGotta love the one eyed pug!

"Mino" says thanks! and she can't wait 'till Tuesday!

Update 6/30/08.

"Mino" and her new family:

Mino and the girls!

Hannah, Mino and Sarah. (Pictures like this make it all worth it!)

8/09 - It breaks my heart to write that Mino developed a very fast growing cancer and was only able to share her life with her new family for a short period of time. She touched all of us with her great attitude and zest for life. If any of my fosters deserved years of bliss, it was Mino, but it was not meant to be. I need to thank the Martin family from the bottom of my breaking heart. They took in this little Pug, shared their life and their love with her and gave her the best year any little dog could hope for. You are rescue angels!

Updates on Hannah the Boston Terrier

Hi Mary-Jo,

How are you?  I am so sorry for forgetting to send the Halloween pictures.
Time is going by just too fast.  Hannah is doing awesome.  I don't know if I
ever
mentioned it, but I renamed her Zoey soon after I got her, as she didn't seem
especially attached to her name.  I can't believe it's almost been a year since
I picked her up at the cargo terminal in Philly.  She recently traveled with me
to my parents' home in Chicago, and had a blast with their 3 cats and maltese.
My grandfather's memory is going, but after meeting Zoey last year, he always
remembers to ask how she is doing.
Eventually I would like to get a second dog, maybe in the next year or two.  We
went on a 1/2 hour run today, and she and the cat are curled up next to me on
the couch snoring!  I attached a few pictures of her.  I am not very good at
remembering to take pictures, but I will send more as I take them.  I can't
believe anyone ever gave up this phenomenal dog.

Best wishes,
Jennifer

After Adoption, now called Zoey

Hi Mary-Jo,

I just wanted to let you know that Zoey (previously Hannah) continues to be a
fantastic family member.  I fostered another Boston for awhile, and she was on
her best behavior the whole time. The submissive urination is happening less
and less frequently.  I thought you'd also find this entertaining- my doorbell
rang the other morning, and it was some little girls from the neighborhood
asking if Zoey was available for a play date.  I think she will be missed in
the old neighborhood more than me!

I just wanted to let you know that we are moving to Athens, Georgia.  I
graduated veterinary school in May and accepted a 1 year position at the
university down there.  I hope all is well with you.  My phone number is the
same if you need to contact me for any reason (773) ***-****
Best wishes,
Jen

Updates on Curly/Charlie the Golden:

Curly was the very first dog I took in to re-home. He was a strong, energetic Golden Retriever whose family just didn't know what to do with him. As things turned out, his only real problem was that he was spending too much time in a crate. When they did let him out, he was so happy, as you can easily imagine, he was hard to control. Admittedly, on busy days, Curly spent up to 23 hours a day in that crate. His family knew that was just not right so they surrendered him to me in the hopes he could find the right home.

When we began to foster Curly, it became immediately obvious that he was a fantastic dog. We took him to the Nashua dog park, back when things were just getting started for them. There, a woman named Linda fell in love with Curly and quickly adopted him. She is a dog sitter and she takes Curly, now known as Charlie, to work with her every day...no more crates, just places to run and play and be loved!

And that crate that Curly spent so much time in...we planted it in the turnout. Every day when the dogs go out, they pee all over it! That's what I call poetic justice.

CurlyCharlie

Brooke/Ginger:

Brooke is a fabulous standard poodle whose family had to move from a large home into a condo. The young, energetic poodle was not able to make the transition, so they asked us to take her.

Brooke has a beautiful personality, tons of energy and is very smart and athletic. A big part of me wanted to keep her and we did just that for about a year after her surrender. I had it in the back of my mind that the original owners would eventually call and want Brooke back, so I didn't want to re-home her too quickly. When it became obvious that was not the case, I began interviewing people who expressed interest in adopting Brooke.

Alainna and I rejected 5 or 6 families before we met John and Peggy Disher of Windham, ME. We wanted an adult only home where Brooke would be the center of attention. We wanted a home that was dog wise, no first time owners. We wanted a family who understood and could afford the upkeep of Brooke's beautiful coat...poodles are high maintenance! And of course, we wanted loving, compassionate people and the Dishers were perfect. They were perfect for Brooke and she was perfect for them...and I couldn't be happier for everyone! .

Brooke

Buster

Gretta

Greta, adopted Sept. 2, '06.

Gizmo

Rufus

Rufus, adopted July 11 '05. His new family reports that Rufus is doing great. He no longer wanders off like he used to and is very content to stay around the house with them. He goes camping year round at their camp in Pittsburg, NH and in winter, Rufus rides on their snowmobile to and from the cabin. They feel they would be lost without him!
